It is also hosting from Dec. 7 to 8 its first UN Peacekeeping Ministerial meeting.But with borders closed to all foreigners from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Mozambique and Malawi since Sunday, the question on whether Korea will make exceptions next week for the delegates from South Africa and the seven other countries remains unanswered.“We are trying to respond to the situation as quickly as possible, keeping all options on the table, including cancellation of the event or moving it to the online space,” a Foreign Ministry official told the JoongAng Ilbo on Monday.All eight countries are members of the African Union and have been invited to the Korea-Africa forum. All except Botswana are members of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations and have been invited to Korea’s first UN Peacekeeping Ministerial meeting.The peackeeping forum was going to bring together over 1,000 people and was to be the largest in-person international conference hosted in Korea since the onset of the pandemic.“As the current situation is in a flux, it is expected that certain changes will be inevitable in the preparation of the event as we follow the government's guidelines,” a foreign ministry official preparing for the peacekeeping forum told the JoongAng Ilbo on Monday.“In order to respond to the situation, we have been thoroughly discussing the matter with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency [KDCA] since last weekend.”Korea closed its borders to foreigners flying in from eight countries in southern Africa following the discovery of the Omicron variant in South Africa, and its designation by the World Health Organization as a variant of concern on Friday.Koreans flying in from the eight countries will be asked to quarantine at a government-run facility for 10 days, regardless of their vaccination status.Foreign nationals on long-term visas will be treated as foreigners and will not be allowed to fly to Korea from those eight countries under the same rules as for citizens, though exceptions may be made for family emergencies.No Omicron-variant cases have been reported in Korea.“We’ve had 333 people enter from the eight countries in the past four weeks, but none of them tested positive,” said Jung Eun-kyeong, commissioner of the KDCA, in a press briefing on Monday.It is the second time since February 2020 that foreign nationals have been prevented from entering the country due to Covid-19. From Feb. 4, 2020 to Aug. 10, 2020, foreigners from Hubei Province, China, were denied entry.Even when Delta-variant cases spiked in India in June this year, Korea allowed foreigners from India to enter Korea as long as they quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.Japan announced on Monday an even stronger prevention measure, stating it will close its borders to all incoming foreign travelers starting Tuesday.Prime Minister Kishida Fumio made the announcement at a press conference at his residence on Monday, adding that it was a temporary measure until the health authorities have more information about omicron.All Japanese nationals returning from several African countries including South Africa, or other countries where cases have been found, will have to undergo 10-day quarantines.Little is known so far about whether the variant is more contagious or lethal than other coronavirus variants, though WHO officials said last week that the Omicron variant does seem to have a higher rate of infection than other variants of concern.

KOTRA 주선으로 독일 롤모델 업체 창업자에게 연락을 받았어요.” 25일 경기 안양시 사무실에서 만난 임성대 에코브 대표(44)는 대형 물류업체에 보낼 사업제안서 마무리 작업에 한창이었다. 그의 메일함에는 독일 마이크로 모빌리티 선도 업체 라이틀의 공동 창업자 투샤 데사이 씨와 주고받은 의견교환서가 가득했다. 올 상반기(1∼6월)만 해도 꽉 막혔던 해외 판로는 7월 데사이 씨를 만난 뒤 유럽, 아시아 업체와의 협업으로 뚫리기 시작했다. 2019년 8월 현대자동차 사내 벤처에서 독립한 전기 자전거 제조업체 에코브는 출범한 지 1년도 안 돼 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 확산의 직격탄을 맞았다. 자동차 양산기술을 자전거 부품 제조에 적용한 에코브는 탄탄한 골조와 성형이 필수인 ‘카고 바이크’(화물용 자전거)에 강점이 있었다. 하지만 팬데믹 탓에 기술을 홍보할 기회가 막혔다. 친환경 배송 수단으로 전기 자전거를 주목한 유럽 등 해외 시장 개척이 시급했지만 홈페이지나 동영상만으로는 거래처 찾기가 쉽지 않았다.KOTRA는 올해 6월 프랑스 스타트업 박람회 ‘비바테크’에 함께 참가한 에코브에 라이틀의 아시아 사업을 계획하던 데사이 씨를 연결해 줬다. 데사이 씨는 수개월째 답보상태였던 부품 설계를 한 달 만에 완성해 준 에코브에 아웃소싱뿐 아니라 아예 사업 협력을 제안했다. 임 대표는 “KOTRA가 주선하자 ‘한국이 보증하는 스타트업’이라는 후광효과가 생겼다. 탐색전에 머물던 기존 미팅들과 달리, 실력이 있으면 곧장 사업으로 연결될 수 있는 ‘진짜 수요’를 소개받았다”고 말했다. 큐티티는 어린이 치아 상태를 셀카 찍듯 손쉽게 확인하는 이아포 서비스를 다음 달 일본에 선보인다.인공지능(AI) 구강관리 솔루션 ‘이아포’를 개발한 큐티티도 KOTRA의 도움을 받았다. 큐티티는 지난해 3월 스마트폰으로 치아와 잇몸을 찍어 애플리케이션으로 전송하면 2, 3초 만에 무료로 구강 건강상태를 확인할 수 있는 서비스를 개발했다. 하지만 코로나19 탓에 예정됐던 국내 사업마저 어그러지며 위기에 놓였다. 이후 해외 업체 미팅만 수십 번을 가졌지만 신사업 이해도가 부족한 기업들을 만나면서 매번 수포로 돌아갔다.그러나 KOTRA 도움으로 일본 소프트뱅크와의 미팅이 성사됐다. 다음 달 현지 서비스를 시작할 예정이다. 고태연 큐티티 대표(48)는 “KOTRA 연락을 받자마자 동명의 다른 회사가 아닌지 확인했다. 서비스 론칭도 안 했고 해외 실적도 없는 상황에서 글로벌 대기업과 콘택트할 수 있다는 것 자체가 큰 기회였다”고 말했다. KOTRA는 올해 글로벌 기업들과 국내 스타트업을 연결하는 오픈 이노베이션(개방형 협업) 사업을 본격적으로 추진했다. 중소·중견기업 수출을 도와 온 해외무역관을 에코브, 큐티티 같은 기술 스타트업의 현지 진출 창구로 확장한 것이다. 현지 네트워크와 공신력을 이용해 일반에 알려지지 않은 글로벌 기업들의 비공개 기술 수요까지 발굴해 협업 가능성을 높였다. 특히 코로나19로 출장이 제한된 상황에서 KOTRA는 글로벌 기업과의 화상 미팅은 물론이고 해외 기술실증에 필요한 현지 생활정보, 사업 적법성 등 법률적인 지원도 도맡았다. 지난달 말까지 유럽 아시아 중동 등 105개 기업으로부터 182건의 프로젝트를 발굴해 국내 스타트업 730곳을 연결했고 이 중 7곳이 현지 실증 및 사업 기회를 얻었다.김명신 KOTRA 스타트업지원팀장은 “글로벌 기업 연구소와 해외 병원, 공공기관 등으로 오픈 이노베이션 기회를 확대할 것”이라고 말했다.
